The MFCLK Light Kit is a very convenient tool.
I was turned on to this product by a fire service mechanic who was using it while repairing our rig, and while I'm not a professional mechanic myself, in the course of my duties I do find myself in less than adequate lighting conditions and when I saw this item I immediately found the genius in its design, value to user and varied applications for use, especially in the mobile repair field.
Normal lighting "solutions" for me is using my neck or my mouth to hold a small LED flashlight, this wear an awkward head lamp to inspect items while on my floor creeper. While those options are cost effective, it's super frustrating having to do that time and again; worse yet when the flashlight slips, moves or otherwise gets lost in some position, "hands off" use quickly becomes a non-option compromised by circumstance.
Enter this Matco light kit. It's battery powered LED light system built tough with practical attachments that allow ease of use for multiple attachment/use needs. The flat bar attachment is bright (at the brightest of two settings) at 500 lumen output. This base set comes two light heads; the flat LED and standard flashlight output head (optional attachments are the bend a light and LED/UV slim light).
My most appreciated advantage to this item is its magnetic mount and twist/swivel ability for the flat LED component to rotate the light source, and not necessarily the tool, where it's needed once set... and left alone. I place it at the head of my creeper (it has a steel square frame where I can do this) letting me work hands-off.
The set comes in a handy carry case that has the following: (2) Lithium Ion batteries; standard wall and USB adapter/charger; swivel hang hook (detachable magnetic base which it attaches to); 500 lumen slim light attachment (not UV on this kit, but it's an option to purchase separately); and a 500 lumen standard round flashlight head. To add, there is also a(n) o-ring replacement set in there.
Pros/Product details: The whole unit feels sturdy in your hand, but I'd be careful about dropping it (being concerned not to break the slim flat LED attachment. While it doesn't feel cheap in any regard, it also seems to be a tool that you just need to be a little careful with). The on/off button control is at the end, which the end also serves as magnetic base, so in addition to the magnetic swivel hook attachment (the hook can be detached and it's magnetic based used on the battery shaft of the light) there becomes at least a couple of ways to anchor it hands-free (this is how I placed my light onto my creeper).
To add, the unit seems to be water/fluid resistant(?), but I wouldn't go so far as to inspect the inside of a full fish tank with it, if you know what I mean - and though it seems it can take a splash of fluid (again, just a guess...), I wouldn't put it in a water bath.
As far as battery durability and hours/charge, I've no idea. I've used it for about 15 minutes at a time and it has operated without a waver, this a few times straight out of the box; I haven't charged any of the batteries yet.
Cons: My only complaint, and it's a mild one, is that once the hook/magnetic attachment is applied to the battery shaft, and the light is mounted horizontally, the LED bar side his heavier than the opposite side, meaning that the light is not balanced in this matter. Given this, it's a pretty insignificant detail given the options to work around this issue.
Having said all this, the light is a bit expensive, but good tools are and I don't mind having spent the price of purchase to get this light kit - it was well worth it to me. I ordered it online, a regular guy, here on Matco's site. Delivery was pretty quick and the purchase was pretty headache free.
Bottom line: I really fell for this thing when I saw it, and love it more since I've used it as it's a really neatly designed, well built, and versatile tool.
(As a final detail, I ordered the bend-a-light attachment. It's not as bright as I thought it would be given the other lighting options in this product's line and I'm not sure what I'd use it for given that I can stick the slim bar in wherever the bend-a-light would go and still get about 400- 500% more light, but the price wasn't that bad, so I sprung for it. Perhaps it would be good to use inside a wall or under a dash? Thought I'd get it to complete the package at purchase time).
